About Akar Print

Akar Print is a magazine about the everyday stories and histories of Southeast Asia. Akar—Malay for “roots”—is about where we come from, what shapes us, and how we move forward.

Published in Singapore since 2019, Akar Print looks at the past and present with fresh eyes, uncovering the details often left out of history books. We tell stories of places, people, and traditions—some familiar, some nearly forgotten.

This issue is all about movement. Why do people move? What pushes them to leave or pulls them to stay? What happens when movement isn’t a choice—when someone loses their ability to move? Through personal stories, essays, and visuals, we explore what it means to move through time, across borders, and within ourselves.

We’re here to share bits of information that are enjoyable to read—things that make you think, reflect, or simply appreciate the world a little more. No fluff, just real stories worth telling.
